Apostille

Bergen Pro Notary can help you quickly and efficiently obtain an Apostille for documents that you need to use internationally.

What is an apostille?

When you send certain documents outside of the United States, you may need to add an additional level of authentication to the document for it to be accepted in the destination country. This authentication is a certificate issued by the New Jersey Department of Treasury known as an Apostille. Apostilles allow transfer of your public document between the U.S. and another country that is also party to the Hague Apostille Convention of 1961. The Hague convention is an international treaty that streamlined the cumbersome procedure for authenticating documents between countries.

Once completed, your document will have a one-page, 8.5 x 11 document with a color laser print of the of the State of New Jersey Seal and the signature of the New Jersey State Treasurer permanently stapled to it. See below for an example of a completed Apostille. You can then deliver this completed document to the destination country.

How does the Apostille process work in New Jersey?

The apostille process begins with a notary meeting you at your home or office, reviewing your photo ID and notarizing your document with the appropriate form. The notary will then transfer your document to the New Jersey Department of Treasury and complete the appropriate State of New Jersey application forms on your behalf. Once the document has been apostilled by the State of New Jersey, it will be returned directly to you so you can send it to the destination country.

How quickly can I get one and how much does it cost?

Bergen Pro Notary can process your apostille at one of 2 speeds - standard and expedited.
